Livestock, permits and hunting
Every animal added since launch, the permit chain behind them, and how bow hunting, cage traps and the hunting permits actually gate each other.
Hunting permits gate more than hunting: the Pheasant permit unlocks the camping furniture series, and the Fox permit unlocks the bathroom set added in Patch 1.30.
Animals are a slow investment with a permit chain attached, and hunting is the part of the game most people bounce off because the gates are not explained in one place. Here they are.
Every animal, and what gates it
| Animal | Where it comes from | Produces | Gate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken | Chinana's stall | Eggs daily, feathers occasionally | None |
| Duck | Chinana's stall | Eggs daily, feathers occasionally | None |
| Silkie Chicken | Chinana's stall | Eggs daily | Autumn of Year 1 (Patch 1.20) |
| Mallard | Chinana's stall | Eggs daily | Autumn of Year 1 (Patch 1.20) |
| Cow | Chinana's stall | Milk daily | None |
| Goat | Chinana's stall | Goat's milk daily | Buy at least one goat to open the next tier |
| Fluffy Cow | Chinana's stall | Milk daily | After buying at least one goat (Patch 1.20) |
| Spotted Goat | Chinana's stall | Goat's milk daily | After buying at least one goat (Patch 1.20) |
| Cashmere Goat | Chinana's stall | Goat's milk | Unlock conditions were bugged before Patch 1.08 |
Ducks earn their keep twice: Patch 1.20 made them eat more weeds in paddies as their affection rises, which is free labour on a rice block.
The pen upgrade order matters
Patch 1.05 fixed a bug where upgrading the second livestock pen before the first one made animals disappear. Lost animals were restored automatically for players who had already been hit, but the rule stands: upgrade pen one first, always.
Permits do more than hunting
| Permit | Unlocks |
|---|---|
| Pheasant Hunting Permit | The 11-item Camping furniture series at the General Store |
| Fox Hunting Permit | The 10-item Plumbing Fixture series at the General Store (Patch 1.30) |
That is the part nobody says out loud: if you want to decorate, you have to hunt. The furniture sets page lists the items each permit opens, and the unlock list shows the whole chain in one table.
Hunting: bow and trap
Two completely different skills sit behind two different achievements.
- Bow hunting — 100 animals with a bow, at 30.5% global completion. This is the active route: you find the animal, you shoot it.
- Trapping — 100 animals in cage traps, at 4.7%. This is the passive route, and it is six times rarer, which tells you most players never build a trap line.
Patch 1.09 fixed two trap bugs at once: traps could remain broken and unretrievable, and a single cage trap could catch multiple animals. If you tried trapping at launch and gave up, it works now.

Feeding, affection and the 1,000 mark
Animal products are the long game: 1,000 collected for Greatest of Animal Tenders (15.6%), and 500 interactions for Petting Zoo (47.0%). Interaction is cheap — pet the animals you already walk past — while product collection is pure calendar time.
The practical order:
- Two chickens and a cow as soon as you can afford them.
- Upgrade pen one, then pen two.
- Buy a goat to open the Fluffy Cow and Spotted Goat tier.
- Reach Autumn of Year 1 for Silkies and Mallards.
- Start the trap line in the background while you do everything else.
Next
- Furniture sets — what the two hunting permits actually buy you.
- Gifts and requests — animal products make cheap gifts.
- Field guide — how animal entries fill the 1,000-entry tracker.
