Farming: soil, seeds and the seeder
Tilling, paddies, fertilizer and scarecrows, plus the 3-tile seeder added in Patch 1.30 and the tool upgrades that change how a whole field works.
Tilling one square at a time stops being the job once your tools are upgraded; the seeder added in Patch 1.30 sows seeds, seedlings and fertilizer across a 3-tile strip ahead of you.
Farming in Kagatsu is three separate systems wearing one coat: dry fields you till, paddies you dig, and the tool upgrades that decide how much of a day either one costs.
The three field types
| Type | How you make it | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Tilled field | Hoe a square of soil | Vegetables and most seed crops |
| Paddy | Dig the square into water | Rice, and anything that wants standing water |
| Grass | Cut it | Bushels for feed, and forage that respawns |
You will spend your first week tilling one square at a time. That stops being the job once tool range goes up: every farm tool can be upgraded at the anvil to reach more tiles, and the difference is not cosmetic — it is the difference between a field taking an hour and taking a morning.
The Seeder changes planting
Patch 1.30 added the Seeder, and it is the single biggest quality-of-life item in the game.
- Prerequisite: the crossroads hokora must be restored to at least stage three.
- How you get it: a letter arrives, then the Seeder is sold at the General Store.
- What it does: sows seeds, plants seedlings and spreads fertilizer across a 3-tile area ahead of you.
- Upgrading: like every other farm tool, its reach expands at the anvil.
Before the Seeder, fertilizer was a per-square chore. After it, a whole strip goes down in one action.
Fertilizer, scarecrows and the mistakes people make
Patch 1.08 fixed a bug where fertilizer effects were not being applied properly, which means any advice you read from before late August 2026 about fertilizer "not working" was describing a bug, not a mechanic.
Scarecrows got two changes in Patch 1.20:
- Focusing a scarecrow now shows how many days it has left.
- Crops inside a scarecrow's range no longer wither on the same day the scarecrow breaks.
Water and weather
Paddies need water; thunderstorms cancel events rather than crops, and Patch 1.30's notes explicitly warn that some events skip storm days. Build your week around the forecast when a story beat is due.
The numbers behind the field
| Achievement | Target | Global rate |
|---|---|---|
| Plowman | Till 1,000 squares | 55.2% |
| Pastorale | Dig 1,000 paddy squares | 11.0% |
| Produce Producer | Harvest 10,000 crops | 24.2% |
| Lawn and Order | Cut 10,000 bushels of grass | 3.8% |
Those four numbers tell you where the real time goes: tilling is a first-month achievement, paddies are a project, and 10,000 bushels of grass is the quiet monster at 3.8%.

A field routine that survives Autumn
- Cut grass first — bushels feed animals and count toward a long achievement.
- Till only the squares you will plant today; unused tilled soil grows weeds.
- Fertilize in strips once the Seeder is yours, not square by square.
- Harvest into the shipping box the same day, so the shipping tiers move.
- Keep a paddy block separate from vegetables so tool range upgrades do not force a redesign.
Once the field runs itself, the bottleneck moves to animals and permits — the livestock page covers which permit unlocks what, and the grind targets page lists every numeric goal in one table.

- Livestock and hunting — the permit chain and the new animals.
- Money and shipping — turning harvests into the four yen tiers.
- Magatama and skills — the sickle harvest skill and what else the hokora unlocks.
