Gifts, requests and affection levels
How affection is raised, what level 3 unlocks for birthdays, why villager requests are the cheapest money in the game, and how to befriend everyone.
Affection level 3 is the threshold that matters: villagers at level 3 or above wish you a happy birthday and may hand over a present once the birthday event is set up.
Affection is the quiet currency. It does not buy seeds, but it unlocks birthday presents, better request rewards and the 7.7% achievement almost nobody has.
How affection actually moves
Four things raise it, in order of cost-effectiveness:
- Talk to them daily. Free, and it is the baseline every other method stacks on.
- Hand over what they ask for. Requests are the cheapest affection in the game because you were going to collect the item anyway.
- Give gifts. Any item you can hand over counts; Patch 1.30 extended the handing-over range so you no longer have to stand on top of them.
- Show up at festivals. Cherry-blossom viewing and the summer festival are affection events with shopping attached.
Level 3 is the number that matters
The birthday system, added in Patch 1.30, uses affection as a filter: any villager at affection level 3 or higher will wish you a happy birthday, and may give you a present.
| Birthday requirement | Village in the Shade | Village in the Sunshine |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Year 2 | Year 2 |
| Story gate | One day after finishing the main scenario | One day after Nago moves into the village |
| How it starts | A letter arrives; check your mailbox | Same |
| What you do | Set your birthday, then talk to villagers on the day | Same |
If the letter does not arrive, the patch notes are explicit: events skip certain main-story sections and thunderstorm days. Advance the story or wait for clear weather.
Who is who
| Name | Role | What they gate |
|---|---|---|
| Tobari | Gives the hokora restoration request in Shade mode | Hokora stages, magatama skills |
| Nago | Moves into the village in Sunshine mode | Sunshine-mode unlocks, including the birthday gate |
| Chinana | Runs the stall | Livestock, furniture |
| Kiki Construction | Building and relocation service | Structures, flipped buildings |
| The village head | Delivery requests | Kiki Delivery Service achievement (2.3%) |
Requests: the best money in week one
100 completed requests is As You Wish at 14.9%, and every one of them paid out along the way. The loop is simple: check the request board or the villagers themselves, deliver, collect money and affection, repeat.
Patch 1.08 made requests smarter — help requests no longer ask for items from seeds and livestock you have not unlocked. If you played at launch and kept getting impossible requests, that is fixed.
The completion targets
| Achievement | Target | Global rate |
|---|---|---|
| As You Wish | Grant 100 villager requests | 14.9% |
| Countryside Socialite | Befriend every villager | 7.7% |
| Kiki Delivery Service | Fill all of the village head's deliveries | 2.3% |
Countryside Socialite at 7.7% is the tell: most players finish the story long before they finish the village. Befriending everyone is a deliberate project, not a side effect.

A relationship routine
- Walk the village every morning; talk to everyone once.
- Accept every request you can finish today — not next week.
- Keep a stack of cheap, universal gifts for villagers you rarely pass.
- Push the villagers you actually like to level 3 before Year 2 so the birthday event has an audience.
- Leave the completionist run for after the story; the achievements page shows which social ones are rarest.
